Iris takes its name from theย Greekย word for aย rainbow. Some authors state that the name refers to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. It is a popular garden flower. Irises areย perennial plants, growing from creepingย rhizomesย (rhizomatous irises) or, in drier climates, fromย bulbsย (bulbous irises). They have long, erect floweringย stemsย which may be simple or branched, solid or hollow, and flattened or have a circular cross-section. The rhizomatous species usually have 3โ10 basal sword-shaped leaves growing in dense clumps. The bulbous species have cylindrical, basal leaves.
Daffodil are the common name for Narcissus, aย genusย of predominantly spring flowering perennialย plants of the amaryllis family,ย Amaryllidaceae. Another common name for the daffodil is theย jonquilย are used to describe all or some members of the genus.ย Narcissusย has conspicuous flowers with six petal-likeย tepalsย surmounted by a cup- or trumpet-shapedย corona. The flowers are generally white and yellow (also orange or pink in garden varieties), with either uniform or contrasting coloured tepals and corona.
Tulipsย (Tulipa) are aย genusย of spring-bloomingย perennialย herbaceousย bulbiferousย geophytesย (having bulbs as storage organs). The flowers are usually large, showy and brightly colored, generally red, pink, yellow, or white (usually in warm colors). They often have a different colored blotch at the base of theย tepalsย (petals and sepals, collectively), internally. Because of a degree of variability within the populations, and a long history of cultivation, classification has been complex and controversial. The tulip is a member of the lilyย family,ย Liliaceae, along with 14 other genera, where it is most closely related toย Amana,ย Erythroniumย andย Gageaย in the tribeย Lilieae.
Hyacinth grow from bulbs, each producing around four to six linear leaves and one to three spikes orย racemesย of flowers. In the wild species, the flowers are widely spaced with as few as two per raceme inย H.ย litwinoviiย and typically six to eight inย H.ย orientalisย which grows to a height of 15โ20ย cm (6โ8ย in).ย Cultivarsย ofย H.ย orientalisย have much denser flower spikes and are generally more robust.
