Olneys poinsettia greenhouse

The poinsettia plant is a member of the spurge family. Indigenous to Mexico and Central America, the poinsettia was first described by Europeans in 1834. It is particularly well known for its red and green foliage and is widely used in Christmas floral displays. Its scientific name Euphorbia pulcherrima is Latin for “the most beautiful Euphorbia.” They’re also called as the “Painted Leaf” and the “Mexican Fire Plant.”

Poinsettias commonly come in just about every shade of red but are also available in marbled patterns, white, yellowish green leaves, pink and orange.

There are many different types of poinsettias available and Olney’s flowers has the largest selection of poinsettias in central New York. They have poinsettias in many different colors and sizes.

Place potted poinsettias indoors in indirect light. Six hours or more of light (natural or fluorescent) is best. Keep them comfortable, ideally between 65 and 75 degrees, day or night. Lower temperatures will make them drop leaves almost immediately and shut down.

Home gardeners generally keep their poinsettias one or two years. If they’re really dedicated, maybe a little longer. But the life span for interior plants when you live in the North is measured in months, not years.
